Cool story, but no.

Like I mean, "defund police" just didn't happen on any significant scale, and crime rates in places where it did happen still pale in comparison to places where it didn't.

Stop watching Fox news.

But hey, I'll give you some credit, "defund the police" is a pretty bad tagline, both from an optics and a practicality standpoint.

There needs to be things like reform and a clawing back of qualified immunity laws. Those were the more important part of the movement, cutting budgets by 5% was never going to improve anything for anyone.

(The "defunded" Portland police budget went from 245 million to 230 million, with most of that change going towards not filling already vacant positions)

I was pretty clear about that idea from the very beginning of the movement by progressives supporting it. Some cities did drastically cut funding and it didn't work. Ohmar was very vocal about her desire to dismantle MPD and AOC was also a defund supporter until learning it was a poisonous position to take.

There won't be any deflection on the issue, even the backpedaling and reversals will not insulate progressives from criticism on the police issue.

It would require more digging but the city council's and district attorney's and state AG's who fail to prosecute or mayor's and council's that neutered their police force can share the blame here.

They just don't have the spotlight or do as much grandstanding as someone like Ohmar or AOC. Live by social media, die by social media.

This is all I can find, they took 8 million from a 180 million dollar police budget.

I found this one too, where it sounds pretty big. They cut a whole third of their 434 million dollar budget.

Except not. They cut 21 million (again, about 5%), mostly by cancelling a couple cadet classes. The rest of the "cuts" were from moving things like social services out from under the law enforcement umbrella. So I mean, not really.

Cut police funding by 80 million, from 1.7 billion. Again, funding was cut by less than 5%.

If a five percent funding reduction leads to spiraling out of control crime disasters, then reform is even more important than I thought it was.

Combine it with DA's that decide not to pursue charges and it's a problem.

Minneapolis city council voted for the removal of their police force. The vote was 13-0 but to be fair, they aren't all progressives, one is a green party member.

The voters in Minneapolis bailed them out.

I mean, cool. But defunding the police never really happened.

So again, how did "progressive" policies fail? Like, I'll even agree with you and say completely defunding the police isn't overly practical. But it's hard for something to fail that never happened.

It's just part of the CNN narrative, that any failings of the democratic party is the fault of the progressives. Nevermind that McAuliffe was just a terribly boring milquetoast democrat that offered nothing to be enthusiastic about, it was the progressives. Nevermind that Biden has done nothing of note, it's his super progressive policies that are somehow failing, that's the reason his support is in the toilet.

The only thing the "left wing" media hates more than the right is the left. That's why the elected representatives don't represent people. There's two sources of media, far right and corporate right. The far right calls corporate right socialists, then the corporate right blames the left on their unpopularity. And that's the only narrative in the country. That's why we are banning books in 2022.
