I know that guy. We had a local that used to change out the bulbs in his taillights because he thought the CIA was putting bugs and trackers in his vehicle. The local rumor was that he was in some special and black ops in Vietnam.

As a kid, I respected him for being a veteran but he scared the shit out of me and I always worried he was going to completely lose it and hurt or kill someone but it never happened.

Nah. Guys like Rudy always seem to 'skate by' somehow. I served with a few like that. Would do and say crazy stuff and always seem to still be around the next month... minus a stripe or two.

Knew a Sargent (soon to be Private) who, after a few too many, wondered if someone put gas in the tank that sat near the post gate entrance for years... if it would start and run (needed a battery of course but that's easy for a military mechanic). It did... through the fence and across thee field and over a car and through one of the barracks. He was still in the Army when I got transferred later.
